Ms. Taylor keeps the Phun in physics- tabs on teachers

In 2020, Academy High welcomed a new physics teacher, Taylor Shimek. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Ms. Taylor attended Texas State University with the intention of becoming a researcher. There she graduated with two bachelor degrees, applied mathematics and physics. Three years ago, she moved to Champaign, Illinois with her husband and earned her masters degree in physics from the University of Illinois. As she progressed in her degree, she started teaching physics to undergraduate students. From there, she grew to love teaching because she gets to share her love of physics with others.

When Academy High was looking for a new physics teacher, they reached out to Ms. Taylor’s advisor. When Ms. Taylor found out about the job opportunity, she gladly accepted it. She soon learned even more good news: she is due in February with a baby girl. While her family lives far away, she is making the best of her time in quarantine with her husband. We hope that the Academy High community can become like Ms. Taylor’s second family!

During this time in quarantine, many of us are finding new hobbies or trying new things. Ms. Taylor has recommended a Netflix series called, “Explained” which is an American documentary that was released in 2018. Produced by Vox Media, they come out with a new 16-18 minute episode every week covering a range of topics including K-pop, diamonds, and COVID-19. If you are interested in learning new things, Ms. Taylor recommends this show for you to try out!
