Fun Fall Activities for the Family

Are you looking for something fun outdoors to do with your family this fall? There is always pumpkin carving and halloween decorations but most people do that every year. Here are some places to visit to get your family involved in the fall spirit!


Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch is a great place to go for an annual themed corn maze, friendly reindeers, a cafe and gift shop. Making it the perfect place for early Christmas shopping. While you’re there make sure to grab some warm apple cider and homemade fudge.


Curtis Orchard has lots of fun activities, like the traditional apple picking, hay rides, and a pumpkin patch. They also offer other festive activities like pony rides, a goat petting zoo, and mini golf. The orchard is also known for their award winning honey and delicious baked goods.


Homer Lake forest preserve is excellent for anyone. The 10 miles of nature trails are perfect for getting away for some relaxation. Homer Lake’s interpretive center is full of educational activities for younger and older kids alike including, live animal exhibits, interactive displays and an enclosed wildlife viewing area. This lake allows boats and kayaks for the adventurists. This lake also flows into the salt fork river, and is guaranteed to give a good fishing trip.

No one can do pumpkin carving without pumpkins! Negangaurd’s Pumpkin Patch has hundreds of fresh huge pumpkins to choose from that are perfect for carving. They also sell local honey and cider. Maybe pumpkins aren't what you are looking for, there is also a large variety of squashes for your festive fall dishes.


The Parkland Staerkel planetarium is one of the best places to teach kids about space and is the second largest planetarium in Illinois. Every Friday and Saturday there is an out of this world showing about the wonders of outer space. If you miss a certain showing don’t worry just check their events calendar to see when the next one is. They have a variety of different shows that teach kids and adults about what is out there in space.
